K-State PRSSA Attends National ICON 2024 Conference

Nov. 10, 2024 — Student members of Kansas State University’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter proudly represented the university at the annual ICON conference in Anaheim, California from Oct. 13 to 15. Sponsored by the K-State PRSSA chapter, the group immersed themselves in this must-attend event, gaining invaluable professional development and networking opportunities that will shape their futures in public relations.

ICON 2024 brought together professionals and students from across the nation, offering dynamic keynote addresses, breakout sessions, and countless opportunities to connect with industry leaders. The K-State PRSSA members returned from the event feeling inspired, empowered, and eager to apply the insights they gained to their work in Manhattan.Madi Quinn and Eric Shapland

“I’m incredibly proud of how our chapter is taking the initiative to immerse themselves in professional development opportunities like this,” said Eric Shapland, K-State PRSSA President. “We gained so many invaluable insights at this conference, leaving transformed, inspired, empowered, and extremely proud to be a part of PRSSA.”

One key highlight from the event was the opening general session, where Gio Benitez, co-anchor of Good Morning America, shared his personal story of resilience and authenticity. “A major highlight of the trip was listening to Gio Benitez,” said Zoie Stachura, K-State PRSSA Vice President of Communications. “His story of working his way up to ABC was truly inspiring. He emphasized the power of saying yes, allowing mistakes to happen, and embracing who you are. It was a valuable reminder to stay authentic and resilient in our professional journeys.”

Another impactful moment of the conference came from the monday keynote address delivered by Damon Whiteside, CEO of the Academy of Country Music. Whiteside spoke passionately about leadership in the entertainment industry, highlighting the importance of strategic thinking, perseverance and adaptability. His career journey — from his early days at Disney to leading the Academy of Country Music — provided students with a real-world example of how to turn passion into purpose.

Tuesday’s keynote address by Suzi Brown, Vice President of Communications for Disneyland Resort, captivated the K-State attendees with insights into building and maintaining a strong brand identity. Brown’s experience in managing crises and maintaining Disney’s global reputation provided a masterclass in public relations. Her emphasis on resilience and proactive brand management was a valuable takeaway for the future PR professionals in attendance.

“I walked away feeling more confident, inspired and energized than ever, eager to take on new challenges,” said Stachura.

In addition to the keynotes, the K-State team participated in several breakout sessions that covered topics such as personal branding, mentorship and networking. These sessions provided practical strategies and advice that the students are eager to bring back to their chapter and apply in their future careers.

“We cannot wait to continue our memberships and bring these new insights back to our chapter in Manhattan,” Shapland said. With ICON 2024 behind them, the students are dedicated to their professional growth and look forward to continuing to strengthen the K-State PRSSA chapter’s presence on both local and national stages.
