Biographical Information
Karamatu is a dedicated and resilient scholar with a passion for education, health communication, and the intersection of media and society. Her journey in the field of communication began in Ghana, where she earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies from the Ghana Institute of Journalism. Her academic journey continued as I pursued a Master’s in Mass Communication at Kansas State University. In addition to her academic pursuits, she is a dedicated Graduate Teaching Assistant, where she teaches and mentor students in public speaking. This role allows her to combine her love for education with her commitment to helping others develop their communication skills—skills that are essential for personal and professional success. She has also won two departmental awards for her hard work: The Bettie Merrill Seitz and Ellen & Ronald Warren scholarships.
Research
Karamatu's research interests lie at the intersection of health communication, strategic communication, and cross-cultural communication. She is particularly passionate about how health communication messages impact vulnerable groups, minorities, and immigrant communities. Her recent work with other colleagues includes an accepted conference paper titled "Navigating Cross-Cultural Communication: Strategies for Effective Healthcare Delivery to Immigrant Communities," which she will present at the 2024 National Communication Association Annual Convention in New Orleans, LA.
Career
Karamatu is deeply involved in community service and mentorship. As a Black Muslim woman, she is passionate about advocating for women’s and children’s rights and supporting initiatives that empower underrepresented groups. Her personal philosophy is centered on the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to succeed, and she strives to inspire others through her work, both inside and outside the classroom.
Karamatu maintains excitement for her future and the opportunities it holds for further research and teaching. Her long-term goal is to pursue a Ph.D. in Media and Information, focusing on health communication and its impact on vulnerable populations. Karamatu is committed to contributing to the academic community and to making a meaningful impact through her research and teaching.
