Scholarships

The A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication is committed to helping our students pay for college through both need-based and merit-based scholarships. Scholarships are available to all Media and Communication students, including incoming, transfer, returning, and graduate students.

Alumni giving provides nearly $250,000 in annual scholarships for students in the A.Q. Miller School. Thanks to this generosity, the Media and Communication scholarship program is one of the largest funders of education in K-State’s College of Arts and Sciences.

If you are majoring in — or are intending to major in — advertising and public relations, communication studies, digital innovation in media, or news and sports media, you may apply for A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication scholarships.

The priority date for submitting applications through the K-State Scholarship Network (KSN) by incoming freshman is February 1. To ensure eligibility, call the K-State Office of Admissions at 785-532-6250 and make sure you have indicated your major within the department.

The priority date for continuing students, transfer students, and international students is March 15.

Application Guidelines

Scholarship applicants should be aware of the following guidelines:

General Requirements

Applications lacking any of the materials will not be considered.
A minimum 2.5 cumulative GPAis required unless the donor of a specific scholarship has designated otherwise.
Late applications (submitted after 5 p.m., March 15, 2023) will not be accepted.
Scholarships are awarded for two semesters of full-time work. The student can expect to receive half of each scholarship at the beginning of each semester. No students will receive full scholarships for half-year enrollment. In addition, if you fail to enroll for at least 12 hours (or 6 hours for graduate students) and complete at least 9 hours of credit (or 3 hours for graduate students) in the fall semester, your scholarship for the subsequent spring semester will be canceled.
Preference is given to applicants with fewer than 89 hours by the end of the fall semester of the preceding academic year. If you have more than 89 hours by the end of the fall semester, but plan to return the next fall, please explain why the scholarship committee should consider your application for a scholarship.

Materials to Include

Application Letter

Upload an application letter expressing your professional and academic interests and answering why you are attending, or wish to attend, the A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication. Give us some sense of what you hope to accomplish in your career and how that is reflected in your academic, professional, and extracurricular activities. Also include an overview of your more challenging courses and what you did to succeed in those courses. Indicate any financial need you might have as it pertains to your higher education. Please use the letter to provide us with a holistic picture of you. Remember, spelling and grammar count.

Students who are less comfortable writing an application letter are encouraged to introduce themselves using an alternative audio or video format. Please upload a link to your mp3/video in the pdf document for submission (KSN does not allow alternative formats for upload). Please make sure that your link stays stable in a virtual space for the duration of the scholarship judging period. A broken link or a nonfunctioning, non-acceptable format could result in disqualification without notice.

Resume

Upload a resume (PDF format only) of your accomplishments so far that include your media work (for a commercial, nonprofit, or educational organization). If it applies, specify which leadership positions you have held while doing this work and explain the nature of the work involved. Experience can also include journalism and mass communications internships. Your resume should also include any extracurricular, volunteerism or leadership activities you have participated in, as well as any awards or honors you have received.
