GRACE PERIOD FOR KANELECT FLEXIBLE SPENDING

The Kansas Health Policy Authority has recently granted a grace period for the KanElect Health Care flexible spending account. The 2007 plan is extended until Feb. 29, 2008, for qualifying medical expenses occurring during the period Jan. 1, 2007, through February 2008.

UPCOMING UNIVERSITY HOLIDAYS

Thursday, Nov. 22, and Friday, Nov. 23, the university will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has declared Monday, Dec. 24, a legal holiday for state of Kansas employees in observance of the holiday season. Questions should be addressed to the Division of Human Resources, 532-6277.

2007 DISCRETIONARY DAY

The last day employees may use their 2007 discretionary day is Saturday, Dec. 29. The 2008 discretionary day may be used any day from Dec. 30, 2007, through Dec. 27, 2008.

DECEMBER HOLIDAY MEATS OFFERED

The K-State meat lab is again selling boneless hams and whole smoked turkeys for the holiday season.

Hickory-smoked turkey is $2.09 per pound; hickory-smoked boneless ham costs $2.99 per pound. The turkeys and hogs were raised and processed at K-State.

Orders for the December holidays should be placed by Dec. 3. Pick-up dates are Dec. 5 through Dec. 19. Orders must be picked up at the K-State dairy bar in Call Hall. Hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Payment should be made when the order is picked up. To place orders or for more information, call 785-532-1292. Flu vaccine clinic

Lafene Health Center will give flu vaccines at 8:30-11:30 a.m. and 1:30-4 p.m. The clinic operates on a walk-in basis for students, faculty and staff as well as spouses and children 18 and older. Fees: injectable, $19; nasal spray, $28.

Nov. 16
Leadership lounge

"Leading interdisciplinary teams" will be the focus of the noon to 1 p.m. session, K-State Student Union Stateroom 1.

IDT Roundtable Series
"What K-State Libraries Can Do for You Online" will be the topic. The series runs from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Hemisphere Room, Hale Library. Drinks will be available; feel free to bring a lunch.

Sci-fi exhibit
"Not of This World! The David J. Williams III Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Collection" is on display from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays Oct. 12 to Dec. 31, fifth-floor gallery, Hale Library. The exhibit contains more than 100 items from writers like H.P. Lovecraft, Isaac Asimov, Anne Rice, Stephen King, Clark Ashton Smith, Jack Vance and L. Sprague de Camp. Science fiction author Robert Sawyer will lecture at 2:30 p.m., Dec. 4, Hemisphere Room, Hale Library.

Nov. 12-16 is International Education Week. Mohammed Abdul Rahman Alomar, a Saudi cultural attaché, will lecture at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the K-State Student Union Little Theater. An international educator award reception will be from 3-5 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Hale Library Hemisphere Room. David Graff will lecture on "One Hundred Years a Minute: Chinese History in a Hurry," from 2-3 p.m. Nov. 16 in the K-State Student Union Big 12 Room. Max Lu will lecture on "China Rising: Some Recent Chances in an Ancient Land," from 3:10 to 4:10 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Union Big 12 Room.

Chris Sorensen, who has won every major teaching honor awarded by K-State, has been named the national 2007 Outstanding Doctoral and Research Universities Professor of the Year. The honor is awarded by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Read more

CULBERTSON TO RECEIVE MASAO HORIBA AWARD

Chris Culbertson, associate professor of chemistry, has won a 2007 Masao Horiba Award for "Rapid Analysis of Individual T-Lymphocyte Cells on Microfluidic Devices." He received the award Oct. 17, during a ceremony at Kyoto University in Japan, where he also presented a lecture.

The award is named for the founder of Horiba Ltd., a company that manufactures, sells and markets measurement and analysis tools used in fields ranging from medical diagnostics and automotive emissions to the semiconductor industry. Established in 2004, the award promotes research activities in the field of analysis and measurement technology in Japan and abroad.

Culbertson’s project was one of three chosen from among 29 nominations. The winners were selected for the potential of the researcher, originality of the research and the possibility of the research being developed into unique measurement instruments.

PLANNING PROGRAM RECEIVES AWARD

The regional and community planning program at Kansas State University received the 2007 Ad Astra Award from the Kansas Chapter of the American Planning Association.

Given during last month’s annual conference held in Manhattan, the award recognized "significant long-term contributions to the field of community planning, taking the profession to higher levels and making great communities happen." The award also recognized the 50th anniversary of K-State’s planning program, currently part of the department of landscape architecture/regional and community planning in the College of Architecture, Planning and Design.

Program faculty include Professors Al Keithley, John Keller, Larry Lawhon, Sherri Smith, Ray Weisenburger and Professor Emeritus Vernon Deines.

GRIFFIN HONORED FOR RURAL MENTAL HEALTH WORK

Charlie L. GriffinCharlie L. Griffin has received the Victor I. Howery Memorial Award given each year by the National Association for Rural Mental Health to one who has made contributions to the rural mental health field.
Griffin, a research assistant professor of family studies and human services in the College of Human Ecology, has been working with transitions in the agricultural sector and rural mental health outreach since 1985.

He is project director for Programs for Workplace Solutions and the Kansas Rural Family Helpline, which provides confidential, emotional support, information and referrals for rural families struggling with unmet emotional, medical, financial or legal need.

 

POINTS OF PRIDE

K-State sets the standard for awards

No research/doctoral university in the nation has ever won both the national professor of the year and the state professor the year award in the same year.
K-State is the only Kansas school to have had a national winner - and K-State has had two.

K-State French literature course top notch

The College Board Advanced Placement Best Practices study has selected an introduction to French literature course offered at K-State as one of the top 10 courses in its subject area in the nation.
