ALL-UNIVERSITY OPEN HOUSE APRIL 24 A CHANCE TO SHOW OFF ALL K-STATE HAS TO OFFER

K-State is inviting everyone to experience university life firsthand at the All-University Open House, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 24.

K-State's open house is free and a chance to experience what being a K-Stater is all about. Hands-on demonstrations, entertainment, exhibits and tours offer everyone a taste of what the university offers. Each college puts together an array of educational demonstrations and activities, many of them interactive and kid-friendly. An abundance of food and entertainment also will be available.

For future students, college and program representatives will be on hand to discuss K-State's more than 250 majors and options, and what might be the best fit. Walking tours of the campus will leave every half hour from the admissions booth in the K-State Student Union, with the 1 p.m. tour to be conducted in both English and Spanish. A free online career assessment also is offered every hour beginning at 10 a.m. in 14 Holton Hall. Sign up early as the test is limited to eight people an hour. The residence halls, Jardine Apartments and K-State's Greek houses also will have information available and tours throughout the day.

Events will take place across campus. At Mosier Hall, kids can look into a cow's stomach or slither over to the Exotic Animal Medicine Club booth to have their picture taken with a scaly, feathery or furry creature. Soda-pop geysers will be erupting outside Call Hall, and kids can meet a variety of animals face-to-snout outside Weber Hall. Gingerbread women will be available to decorate at the women's studies' booth on the Union's ground floor. Cockroaches will race at the K-State Insect Zoo at the K-State Gardens, and a five-hole miniature golf course will be available outside Justin Hall.

Entertainment will include Cadence, K-State's a cappella group, at 10 a.m. on the Bosco Plaza, the K-State Singers at 11 a.m. in the quad and a performance by the Kansas City Marching Cobras drill team around 12:30 p.m., also on the Bosco Plaza. The Lecompton Reenactors will bring to life a Civil War-era town hall meeting at 9:15 a.m. at the Bosco Plaza, in addition to performances at 10 a.m. and noon in the quad.

Plenty of food will be available, as a variety of K-State groups will be serving up some delicious offerings like pancakes, hotdogs and pork burgers.

Highlights for 2010 All-University Open House include:

* "Hair-raising" physics demonstrations, 143 Cardwell Hall and main entrance. A demonstration of favorite physics tricks will be at 12:30 in 103 Cardwell Hall.
* Ask K-State's poet-in-a-box to compose a poem on a topic of your choice, ground floor, K-State Student Union.
* Climb a rock wall tower, Bosco Plaza
* Make and take art project led by future art educators, Bluemont Hall.
* Face the physical challenges of Twister and learn a little bit about fruits and veggies in the process, Hoffman Lounge, Justin Hall.
* Bring in your child's ailing stuffed animal for the once over by K-State's veterinary staff, small animal lobby, Mosier Hall.
* Design a button made from second-hand clothing, 350 and 351 Justin Hall.
* See how GPS technology influences agriculture, 142 Seaton Hall
* Be amazed as students transform basic blocks of ice into detailed sculptures, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Justin
Hall patio.
* Watch as an original print is silk-screened onto reusable muslin tote bags, 251 Justin Hall.
* Bring pictures of your yard and get expert advice on how to improve your outdoor environment, K-State Gardens.
* Pick up day lily divisions from the university gardens and student-grown bedding plants, K-State Gardens.
* Tour the Biosecurity Research Institute's training lab and try on safety gear, Pat Roberts Hall.
* Watch competition robots and play games written by K-State students, Fiedler Library.

Open house will be followed by the K-State spring football game at 6:10 p.m. at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Tickets are $5. The free SpringFest concert, hosted by the Union Program Council, will follow the game. The concert will feature artists Nick Motil and Quiet Drive and be in the football stadium's east parking lot, Gate 9 area.
