The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation will present Landon Lectures at K-State in the fall.
Adm. Michael G. Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will present the first Landon Lecture of the school year -- and the 154th in the series -- at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, in McCain Auditorium. Retired Gen. Richard Myers, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and K-State alum, will introduce Mullen.
The Landon Lecture by Kansas native Sheila C. Bair, chair of the FDIC, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, in McCain Auditorium. A luncheon for Landon patrons will follow at noon.
"As Landon Lecturers, Adm. Mullen and Chairwoman Bair continue the lecture series' long and prestigious history of bringing some of the nation's top decision makers and noted world leaders to K-State," said Charles Reagan, chair of the Landon Lecture Series and K-State chief of staff and deputy to the president.
Mullen became the 17th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in October 2007. Prior to his appointment, he was serving as the 28th chief of naval operations.
A 1968 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Mullen has commanded three ships, including the guided missile destroyers the USS Goldsborough and USS Yorktown. He has held leadership positions at the Naval Academy, Navy's Bureau of Personnel and the office of the secretary of defense. He also was the 32nd vice chief of naval operations from August 2003 to October 2004, and served as commander, NATO Joint Force Command Naples and U.S. Naval Forces Europe.
As head of the FDIC, Bair oversees an agency tasked with maintaining stability and public confidence in the nation's financial system. Bair, who was born and raised in Independence, became the 19th chair of the FDIC in 2006 and is serving a five-year term. She also was appointed a member of the FDIC's board of directors through July 2013.
Prior to her appointment to the FDIC, Bair was Dean's Professor of Financial Regulatory Policy for the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. She also has served as assistant secretary for financial institutions at the U.S. Department of the Treasury; senior vice president for government relations of the New York Stock Exchange; and commissioner and acting chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. In addition, Bair served as research director, deputy counsel and counsel to U.S. Sen. Robert Dole of Kansas.
Bair is a graduate of the University of Kansas, where she earned her bachelor's and her law degree.
