MANHATTAN — Three undergraduate programs in the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering at Kansas State University have received accreditation for the first time by ABET, the global accreditor of college and university programs in applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology.

The college's three newest programs — biomedical engineering, cybersecurity and environmental engineering — received ABET accreditation at their first opportunity after meeting the organization's eligibility requirements, which include having the inaugural class of graduates finish each program.

ABET accreditation assures that programs meet standards to produce graduates ready to enter critical technical fields that are leading the way in innovation and emerging technologies and anticipating the welfare and safety needs of the public.

The biomedical engineering and environmental engineering programs were accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, while the bachelor's in cybersecurity was accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET.

"We are pleased to see ABET recognize our newest programs as meeting the rigorous standards of their accrediting organization," said Matt O'Keefe, dean of the Carl R. Ice College of Engineering. "All of our eligible programs have been ABET accredited for decades, and our graduates can speak to the value of a K-State education from our college, which this accreditation confirms."

Developed by technical professionals from ABET's member societies, ABET criteria focus on what students experience and learn. ABET accreditation reviews examine program curricula, faculty, facilities and institutional support, and the reviews are conducted by teams of highly skilled professionals from industry, academia and government who have expertise in the ABET disciplines.

ABET is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization with ISO 9001:2015 certification. It currently accredits 4,564 programs at 895 colleges and universities in 40 countries and areas.
