MANHATTAN — Christopher Barlett, assistant professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Kansas State University, has been elected a fellow of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in recognition of his groundbreaking and longstanding contributions to the field and the society.
Members of the society who earned a Ph.D. more than 10 years ago are eligible to be fellows if they have made extraordinary and distinctive contributions to the science of personality and social psychology.
Barlett studies aggression, cyberbullying, aggression intervention and prevention, individual differences, meta-analysis and theory development. He is especially interested in the prediction and reduction of aggressive and violent behavior.
"What impresses me most about Dr. Barlett's research is that he tackles some of the most pressing social problems of today, such as cyber-bullying and violence prevention, and he does so by truly engaging with local communities while also providing our undergraduate students with some of the best mentorship I have ever seen," said David Schmitt, head of the psychological sciences department.
Barlett has examined the many personality and situational factors that can individually and interactively predict aggression. Recently, he has focused on understanding the predictors of cyberbullying, validating his own cyberbullying theory and developing a unique cyberbullying-focused intervention.
"It is an honor and privilege to be selected as an SPSP fellow," Barlett said. "My career has focused on studying and understanding antisocial behaviors so that society can be better equipped to reduce those behaviors. I am very fortunate to be on faculty in the department of psychological sciences at K-State, whose faculty members have been very supportive of my research endeavors and allowed me to thrive to become an SPSP fellow."
Barlett received his bachelor's and master's degrees in psychology from Kansas State University in 2004 and 2007, respectively, and his doctoral degree in psychology from Iowa State University in 2012. Before joining K-State's psychological sciences faculty, he was an associate professor at Gettysburg College.
