Tony Award-winning play 'The Heiress' to wrap up K-State Theatre season

Monday, April 22, 2013

MANHATTAN -- The Tony Award-winning play "The Heiress" will be presented by K-State Theatre at 7:30 p.m. April 25-27 and May 2-4 and at 2:30 p.m. May 5 in Nichols Theatre on the Kansas State University campus.

Written by Ruth and Augustus Goetz, "The Heiress" is set in New York in the 1850s. A shy and plain young girl, Catherine Sloper, meets and falls desperately in love with Morris, a handsome and charming young fortune hunter, all to the disgust of Catherine's father, Dr. Austin Sloper. A sternly protective yet unloving father, he forbids the marriage. Catherine suggests elopement; Morris refuses as he finds little endearing about her without her money. Catherine is later approached by Morris again for her hand in marriage. She leads him to believe she will marry, but will not be fooled a second time.

"The Heiress" won the Tony Award in 1995 for best revival of a play. The show was recently revived for a third time on Broadway and closed a successful run on Feb. 19.

Charlotte MacFarland, associate professor of theatre, is directing "The Heiress." Set design is by JJ Wickham, a guest artist; costume design is by Dana Pinkston, associate professor of theatre; and lighting design is by John Uthoff, associate professor of theatre.

Tickets are $14 for the general public, $12 for seniors and military and $8 for students, with applicable taxes and fees.
