K-State Olathe offers summer experience in public health to high school, college students

Tuesday, April 16, 2013

OLATHE -- Kansas State University's Olathe campus and the Pathways to Public Health component of One Health Kansas are teaming up to offer a summer experience in public health for high school and college students.

The camp will be June 17-18, at K-State Olathe, 22201 W. Innovation Drive. High school juniors and seniors and college freshmen and sophomores are eligible to attend.

The summer experience in public health is a noncredit summer program where students will learn about public health and One Health through hands-on activities, presentations and tours. Topics include food safety, human nutrition, physical activity and infectious diseases and zoonoses, which are the four emphasis areas of the K-State Master's of Public Health program.

Activities will include tours of the Kansas City Zoo, the Johnson County Water Quality Laboratory and a hands-on food safety activity, as well as presentations on school gardens, nutritious snacks, natural playscapes, and walkable communities.

Beth Montelone, associate dean of the university's College of Arts and Sciences and program director of One Health Kansas said, "We are taking advantage of the unique opportunities offered by the Olathe campus to offer students in the Greater Kansas City area a chance to explore public health and One Health topics. We hope to encourage them to consider related K-State majors that are aligned with the Master of Public Health program."

Cost to attend is $30. Register at http://olathe.k-state.edu/k-12/camps-workshops/seph-camp-2013.html.

For more information, contact Martha Nowak, curriculum coordinator for the summer experience in public health, at 913-307-7321 or mnowak@k-state.edu.
