MANHATTAN — The Friends of the Kansas State University Gardens has planned a public bus trip Thursday, May 15, to the Overland Park Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.
"The gardens cover more than 300 acres and consist of 10 individual gardens each of which offers unique and unexpected pleasures," said Marti Meek, one of the trip organizers.
For example, the Erickson Water Garden is home to bird and butterfly plants, wildflowers and ornamental grasses situated among tumbling streams and waterfalls.
The Monet Garden features willow trees, perennials and annuals around ponds to create a colorful palate that remind the visitor of Claude Monet's paintings, she said.
The bus departs Manhattan at 8 a.m. and returns around 5:30 p.m. The $75 fee includes round-trip bus transportation, continental breakfast and drinks on the way to Kansas City, admission to the gardens, guided tour and lunch.
Reservations and trip payment are due May 1 by contacting Anne Springer with the university's horticulture department at 785-532-1442 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday. Registrants may also visit or write the department at 2021 Throckmorton Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506.
