K-State master's degree program in adult education expanding to Olathe campus

OLATHE -- A Kansas State University master's program is expanding to the university's Olathe campus, with the first course being offered this summer.

The master's degree program in adult education will teach working professionals in the Kansas City area how adults learn, how to best present academic programs and how to market adult-learning programs. The program is open to those who work with adult learners, including in the areas of corporate training, religious education, program administration and English as a second language. Students do not have to have an undergraduate degree in education.

The university also offers the program at Fort Leavenworth and online.

"This program at Kansas State University Olathe builds on the success we've had in the greater Kansas City area for more than 30 years," said Royce Ann Collins, assistant professor in educational leadership, who will be teaching the summer course. "We are so happy to have a new home in Olathe, where we can bring all that the university has to offer to our Kansas City-area students."

The degree will allow the Olathe campus to further partner with the animal health and food safety industry.

"We are excited about the opportunity to offer flexible and innovative programs, training and workshops for industry partners in animal health and food safety," Collins said.

"Having Royce Ann Collins in Olathe to offer these educational opportunities to our partners in the core of the animal health corridor is an incredible benefit to the industry, but it also enhances our relationships and gives us the opportunity to further develop our mission," said Dan Richardson, K-State Olathe CEO.

Collins will teach Principles of Teaching Adults at the Olathe campus the summer. The course reviews the basics of teaching adults by exploring methods and techniques that enhance creativity and interaction in the face-to-face and online learning environments. The program track also includes Introduction to Adult Education, Characteristics of the Adult Learner, Social Foundations of Adult Education, Principles of Teaching Adults and Program Planning.
