Bower family scholarship to benefit students from Wabaunsee County area

MANHATTAN -- George Bowers, Mesa, Ariz., has made a planned gift to Kansas State University to establish the Pat and Clarice Bowers Family Scholarship.
The scholarship, in honor of Bowers' parents, is part of his estate plans and will be distributed to the university at a future date. Once established, the scholarship will be awarded to students from Mission Creek Township or Wilmington Township in Wabaunsee County who are enrolled at Kansas State University. One student will be awarded each year until there are four recipients. The scholarship is intended to cover tuition for the four students annually.
Bowers is a native of Eskridge, Kan. He earned a bachelor's in business administration with an emphasis on human resources from Kansas State University in 1972. After deciding to change careers and become a history teacher, Bowers received his bachelor's in history from Washburn University and a master's in educational administration from Emporia State University. He spent 35 years in education, mostly as a building-level administrator.
Bowers is a member of the Kansas State University Foundation's Presidents Club, a philanthropic leadership organization for friends and alumni of the university, and the Land Grant Legacy Society, an organization for those who have included the university in their estate plans.
"I believe we each must help those who follow us, and I wanted to honor my parents," Bowers said. "Considering my deep roots in Wabaunsee County where I saw so many kids not even considering attending college, usually because of financial limitations, I decided to establish a scholarship in my parents' names. I want to help young people expand their vision of what life might be for them by giving them a better opportunity to attend college."
Philanthropic contributions to the university are coordinated by the KSU Foundation. The foundation staff works with university partners to build lifelong relationships with alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students through involvement and investment in the university.
