Furniture Amnesty Day coming July 25
Tuesday, July 1, 2014
MANHATTAN — Preparations for the sixth Furniture Amnesty Day in Manhattan are underway and event organizer Lynda Bachelor says the day's impact on the community continues to grow, involving more than 550 households and 1,000 individuals.
"Each year we have seen an increase in participants and those interested in donating their unwanted furniture," said Bachelor, project coordinator for Kansas State University's School of Leadership Studies and director of HandsOn Kansas State.
This year's Furniture Amnesty Day is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, July 25, in the City Park parking lot near the Wilson baseball fields. The city of Manhattan and members of Manhattan Good Neighbors will soon be taking calls about picking up unwanted furniture, where the furniture can be dropped off and how people can volunteer for this daylong event.
The public is invited to drop off furniture from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on July 25. If you would like to donate your furniture but are unable to drop it off, contact the city at kays@cityofmhk.com or 785-587-2454 to schedule a pickup time the day of the event. A limited number of pickup times are available, so call early.
For those wanting to select furniture, time slots will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Time slot assignment begin at 8 a.m. and will last until all slots are filled. The public is encouraged to come early, too, for time slots from noon until 5 p.m. After 5 p.m., anyone can select from the furniture that is left.
"Furniture Amnesty Day serves as a friendly reminder and encouragement to students and community members to properly dispose of their household items and to help keep furniture out of landfills," Bachelor said.
Because of the event's growth, more volunteers are needed. HandsOn Kansas State is seeking 50 volunteers, 20 in the morning and 30 in the afternoon. If interested, sign up online at http://bit.ly/HOKS_signup.
Manhattan Good Neighbors is a part of HandsOn Kansas State, a program offered by the School of Leadership Studies that creates opportunities for people to volunteer, learn and lead in their communities.
