SERVING STUDENTS: DEREK JACKSON NAMED DIRECTOR OF HOUSING AND DINING SERVICES

MANHATTAN -- After a national search, Kansas State University has selected Derek Jackson to lead the unit that houses and feeds more than 5,000 students living on campus.

Jackson has been named director of housing and dining services. He currently serves the unit as associate director for administrative services and residence life. He will begin his new duties July 1.

"I am excited about the opportunity to serve our K-State students and staff as the director of housing and dining services," Jackson said. "The department is of the highest caliber because of the commitment that our staff have in doing their work better every day. I look forward to the future as we continue to improve the housing and dining experience for our students, campus and community."

Jackson succeeds Chuck Werring, who is retiring.

"I want to personally thank our retiring director, Dr. Werring, for the opportunities that he provided me to grow into this position and for his leadership of our department for the past 20 years," Jackson said. "As he retires he is leaving a legacy of care for the students and staff that I will gladly continue. He is a visionary who has helped shape our department, campus and the campus housing profession. It is my honor to follow in his footsteps."

Jackson first came to K-State in 1989 as a hall director for Putnam and Haymaker halls. He returned in 1997 as assistant director for residence life. Jackson also has experiences in housing and dining at Emporia State University and the University of Georgia, where he directed buildings that housed athletes, games officials, security personnel and distinguished guests of the 1996 Summer Olympics.

"After considering candidates from across the nation, we found the best director for housing and dining services right here at K-State," said Pat Bosco, vice president for student life. "Under Derek's leadership, our students will continue to get an on-campus living experience that is second to none."

Jackson earned a bachelor's degree in social science from Emporia State and a master's degree from K-State in student counseling and personnel services. He is finishing his doctorate at K-State in student affairs in higher education.
