Folklore and more: April English events feature Irish storyteller, lectures and student presentations
MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University's department of English will host a variety of lectures, graduate student presentations and even an Irish storyteller as part of its April activities.
The events, all free and open to the public, include:
* Irish storyteller Clare Murphy will present "Undreamed Shores: An evening of fabulous folktales filled with fools and wise men, tricksters and heroes from around the world" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 2, in the K-State Student Union Little Theatre. It's sponsored by the Union Program Council; the department of communication studies, theater and dance; the drama therapy program; the department of sociology, anthropology and social work; the School of Leadership Studies; and the department of English.
* A reading by John Price, professor of English at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, will take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 12, in the Flint Hills Room at the Union. Price is the author of the memoirs "Man Killed by Pheasant and Other Kinships" and "Not Just Any Land: A Personal and Literary Journey into the American Grasslands." He has received a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts and other recognitions for his writing about nature. Price is also currently a fellow at the Black Earth Institute. The event is sponsored by the department of English, Konza Prairie Biological Research Station and Creative Writing Enthusiasts.
* The 21st annual Cultural Studies Symposium will be at 4 p.m. Friday, April 13, in the Big 12 Room at the Union. The symposium will feature a lecture by Claire Colebrook, professor at Pennsylvania State University. The event is sponsored by the department of English and the offices of the president and the provost.
* The department of English will participate in the All University Open House from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 21, on the ground floor in the Union. The department's table will feature poems made to order by the resident "Poet in a Box," literary quizzes with free books as prizes and answers to the frequently asked question "What can you do with an English major?"
* The Distinguished Graduate Faculty Award Lecture will by given by Phil Nel, professor of English, at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in the Union Little Theatre. A December 2011 recipient of the faculty award, Nel's lecture is titled "Collaborating with the FBI, Reading Other People's Mail and Taking Children's Literature Seriously: Tales from Writing the Biography of Crockett Johnson and Ruth Krauss."
* The ninth annual Literature Track Graduate Symposium will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in Room 213 of the Union. The event will feature presentations by three K-State graduate students.
