In-service invitation: K-State Olathe offering summer educational opportunity for 20 Kansas teachers
OLATHE -- Kansas State University Olathe, in partnership with One Health Kansas, is offering a hands-on professional development in-service program on the awareness and understanding of the interconnections among human, animal and environmental health. The in-service program will be June 11-14 at the Olathe campus.
Twenty Kansas high school teachers in science -- biology, chemistry, life science and environmental science -- and career and technical education -- agriculture science, health science, biochemistry and biomedical pathways -- will be accepted into the program. Applications must be received by April 13. All applications will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of their acceptance into the summer in-service program by April 20.
Program participants will each receive a kit containing materials to duplicate the One Health experience in their classrooms as well as an $800 Kansas teacher stipend and one hour of graduate credit from Kansas State University.
One Health Kansas was developed by Kansas State University and is funded by the Kansas Health Foundation. The mission of One Health Kansas is to promote awareness and understanding of the interconnections among human, animal and environmental health.
"The globalization of world trade and travel make it imperative that future health professionals work together across disciplines. With this program we hope to lay the foundation for that collaboration," said Joan Leavens, integration/outreach leader for One Health Kansas.
The in-service program will be led by experts from industry and government as well as Kansas State University research faculty and staff, including:
* Stephen Higgs, research director, Biosecurity Research Institute at Kansas State University's Pat Roberts Hall
* Jerry Jaax, associate vice president for research and compliance, Kansas State University
* Kirk Suedmeyer, zoo veterinarian, Kansas City Zoo
* Kara Cooper, senior scientist, MRIGlobal
* Alok Bhandari, director, Urban Water Institute, K-State Olathe
* Jean Dory, research scientist, CEVA Biomune
Additionally, the in-service program includes on-site visits within K-State Olathe to the CEVA Biomune Swine R&D Laboratory and off-site visits to the Johnson County Wastewater Plant and the Kansas City Zoo. A virtual tour of the Biosecurity Research Institute is also part of the agenda.
