Part of the reason theileria is so devastating to cattle is because it’s new to the U.S., said Cassandra Olds, a microbiologist at Kansas State University who studies the relationships between pathogens and hosts. U.S. cows are naïve to the disease, Olds explained, meaning the animals have never been exposed to the pathogen. Without prior experience, their immune systems have no knowledge of how to contend with the disease.

Broyaka fled Ukraine in March of 2022 following the invasion of Russia, and has since found residency in Manhattan, Kansas where she studies the economic impact the war is taking on Ukraine. "We decided to leave to protect our children," Broyaka explained. "Of course, we did not think that we would be gone for so long…We thought this was just for a few weeks. And now it is a year since we left our home and there is still a lot of uncertainty ahead."

Students earning a grade point average for the semester of 3.75 or above on at least 12 graded credit hours receive semester honors along with commendations from their deans. The honors also are recorded on their permanent academic records. Some cities may listed be outside of the geographical area of their county based on the student's records.

The director of a Kansas State University program that works to address the state’s water challenges credits a team-first philosophy for progress being made to improve water quality and conserve available resources. Susan Metzger, the associate director for K-State Research and Extension and director of the Kansas Center for Agricultural Resources and the Environment, said it’s common for K-State faculty to work together across several areas of expertise to study water issues. "We really consider our work to be a cross-university partnership," Metzger said. "We have researchers who might be sociologists or economists or agronomists or something else, all pulling together because no one discipline can tackle our water resource challenges."

KSU to initiate phase one of ag infrastructure upgrades

Kansas State University (KSU) has raised $81.4 million for an infrastructure upgrade of several departments within the College of Agriculture, including the Department of Grain Science and Industry, university representatives said in a recent exclusive interview with editors from Sosland Publishing Co. The initial money raised from contributions from private and corporate donors, as well as $50 million in pledged appropriations from the Kansas legislature, will allow KSU to begin phase one of the upgrade in the coming months. A second phase is expected to follow, but additional funds will need to be secured for that plan to come to fruition, said Ernie Minton, dean of KSU's College of Agriculture and director of K-State Research and Extension.

“From December 2021 to December 2022, the average price of a dozen eggs has gone up from $1.79 per dozen to $4.25 per dozen, according to USDA retail egg report. The biggest reason is the ongoing outbreak of avian influenza that has affected 46 states and almost 58 million poultry birds,” Kansas State University Food Scientist Karen Blakeslee said.
