K-State Olathe, College of Engineering offer science-based evening of Halloween fun, learning

Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013

OLATHE -- Kansas State University's College of Engineering and Kansas State University Olathe are partnering to offer an evening of Halloween-themed activities for elementary students based on science, technology, engineering and math principles, or STEM.

Trick or Engineering will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, on the Olathe campus, 22201 W. Innovation Drive.

"Many of the amazing feats humans have accomplished throughout time have a common theme: engineering," said Emily Surdez, admissions representative for the College of Engineering at the Olathe campus. "This program allows elementary students to be engineers for a day, experiencing the joy of discovery and the ownership in implementing their ideas. They will utilize math and science knowledge to build structures and create solutions to real-world challenges."

Students will explore the engineering involved in robotics and design a mini "monster" bot, learn about the principles of architecture and technology in building bridges, discover the components in food science while they make a witch's brew of water, and then create a filtration system to clean it. A costume contest and crafts also will be offered.

"Trick or Engineering is an opportunity for area students to be exposed to fun and educational opportunities surrounding engineering concepts and careers," said Micheal Strohschein, director of K-12 science education partnerships at K-State Olathe. "Participants at this event will expand their knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math through a variety of hands-on activities in robotics, structures and water."

Kindergarten through fifth-grade students must preregister to attend. Two activities require separate sign-up. All other activities will be open for any registered participant. More information and a registration link can be accessed at http://olathe.k-state.edu/k-12/engineering.html. Registration will close Oct. 23, or when enrollment is full.
