FAMILY AFFAIR: 83RD ANNUAL K-STATE FAMILY DAY OFFERS FUN ACTIVITIES FOR ALL
MANHATTAN -- Kansas State University students have the chance to show and tell family members their favorite things about their college experience at K-State's 83rd annual Family Day.
This year's Family Day, Saturday, Sept. 17, brings together current K-State students and their family members for a day full of activities for all ages. Emily Lehning, K-State assistant vice president for student life, said the weekend is highlighted by the legacy pinning ceremony and the fifth annual Family Time in Cat Town event on Saturday, both sponsored by the K-State Parents and Family Association.
"They're both well attended and strong K-State traditions," Lehning said. "We encourage families to attend these events as they are good places to start and end the day."
The legacy pinning ceremony and brunch will take place from 10-11:30 a.m. in the K-State Alumni Center ballroom. The ceremony recognizes the commitment of K-Staters across generations; family members who are not alumni will be honored with K-Stater by Choice recognition. Participants will enjoy brunch before the ceremony.
Registration is $15 per person, Lehning said, and reservations can be made by calling 785-532-2222 or by email to pfa@k-state.edu.
Family Time in Cat Town is a casual pregame event on the southwest side of Bill Snyder Family Stadium. It begins at 4 p.m., two hours prior to kick off of the K-State vs. Kent State football game. Featuring great food and the chance to win $2,000 in free tuition, K-Staters and their families will be able to interact with other families and K-State administrators.
The cost to attend Cat Town is $10 per person, and anyone wishing to purchase a free tuition drawing ticket may do so at the event, registering at http://www.k-state.edu/familyday/events, or by calling 785-532-7584. K-State students also need to register to attend.
Many other events will be available throughout the K-State campus Sept. 16 and 17. Lehning said this variety is one of the best aspects about K-State Family Day.
"There are activities for people of all ages, like the K-State Insect Zoo and Beach Museum of Art," she said. "Organizations across campus have came together to provide appealing activities for everyone. Students may have younger siblings or grandparents who attend, and there are things everyone can do together."
Family Day is a great way for students and their families to come together in the students' environment, Lehning said, as well as an opportunity for families to meet important people in the students' college life, such as professors, mentors and peers.
"Some parents or family members live out of state or out of the country, and this is a way for them to feel like they are part of the college experience," she said. "K-State has a long tradition of including families in that experience."
