The arts in autumn: October full of art, comedy, music and more on campus
MANHATTAN -- October is the time to fall into music, comedy, drama and more at Kansas State University. The following events, all free unless otherwise indicated, are sponsored by the university's McCain Performance Series; the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance; and the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art. They include:
* The Flint Hills Trio will perform a recital of arias, duets and trios from opera and musical theater at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1, in All Faith's Chapel. The trio includes Amy Rosine, soprano and assistant professor of music; Patricia Thompson, mezzo-soprano and assistant professor of music; and Reg Pittman, tenor and associate professor of music.
* The Beach Museum of Art will host Meet the Art at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the UMB Theatre. This event will be followed by a university Trumpet Ensemble recital at 11:30 a.m., also at the museum.
* On Wednesday, Oct. 3, guest artists Penny Kruse and Steven Kruse will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. in All Faiths Chapel. Penny Kruse is a professor of violin at Bowling Green State University and Steven Kruse is a professor of viola at Heidelberg University, both in Ohio.
* Nora Lewis, assistant professor of oboe, will perform works by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Astor Piazzolla and Ronald Roseman at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in All Faiths Chapel. The program features Amanda Arrington, staff accompanist, on piano; Paul Hunt, professor of music, on trombone; Gordon Lewis, instructor of music, on double bass; and Frank Sidorfsky, professor emeritus of music, on basset horn.
* Bill Engvall, one of today's most popular and successful comedians, will perform two shows, 7 p.m. and 9 p.m., at McCain Auditorium on Friday, Oct. 5. Tickets to these McCain Performance Series presentations range from $22.50-$85 with applicable taxes and fees. * "Inadvertent Arson," the latest installment of artist Patrick Duegaw's "Painted Theater Project" will open Friday, Oct. 5, at the Beach Museum of Art. The public opening will be from 8-10 p.m. Duegaw is a K-State alumnus and a founding member of Wichita's Fisch Haus artists cooperative.
* Students of Karen Large, assistant professor of music, will perform a flute studio recital at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 8, in All Faiths Chapel.
* Cirque Chinois, the National Circus of the People's Republic of China, comes to McCain Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. Tickets for this McCain Performance Series event cost $18-$48 with applicable taxes and fees. * K-State Theatre will present "Time Stands Still" at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11-13 and Oct. 18-20, and at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 21, all in Nichols Theatre. * On Saturday, Oct. 13, the Central States Marching Festival will be at Bill Snyder Family Stadium from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The show will feature more than 30 high school bands from around the Midwest, as well as a closing performance by the Kansas State University Marching Band. Admission is $5.
* The university's Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will present a special Sousa Concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, in McCain Auditorium. The concert is in collaboration with Hale Library and Friends of the K-State Libraries, and will feature special guest artists Craig Parker, associate professor of music, on trumpet; Karen Large, assistant professor of music, on flute; and Ryan Nowlin, staff arranger for the "President's Own" United States Marine Band.
* Guest organist Brett Valliant will play an accompaniment to the original 1925 silent version of "Phantom of the Opera" at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, in All Faiths Chapel. Valliant, a world-renowned theater organist, is the director of music, worship and the arts at First United Methodist Church in Wichita.
* All Faiths Chapel will be the site of a recital by the Greenbrook Ensemble at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16. The ensemble is a flute, saxophone and piano trio based in Nashville, Tenn., and includes Jessica Dunnavant, Paula Van Goes and R. Timothy McReynolds.
* The Kansas State University Orchestra, conducted by David Littrell, university distinguished professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, in McCain Auditorium. The concert will feature the winners of this year's concerto contest: Peter Weinert, trombone, a senior in music education from Winfield, and Emory Rosenow, violin, a senior in instrumental performance, Manhattan.
* Guest vibraphonist Jerry Tachoir will perform a concert at the Beach Museum of Art at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17. Tachoir, also a marimba performer, has presented jazz clinics and mallet master classes at universities across North America and Europe.
* The Bassoon Studio of Susan Maxwell, instructor of music, will perform a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, at All Faiths Chapel.
* The general student recital will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at All Faiths Chapel The recital will feature students from wind, string, percussion, keyboard and voice divisions of the music program at the School of Music, Theatre and Dance.
* Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of tuba, will present a solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, in All Faiths Chapel.
* The McCain Performance Series will present "Spirituals to Funk," featuring Dr. John and the Blind Boys of Alabama, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19. Tickets cost $18-$75 with applicable taxes and fees, and can be purchased at the McCain Auditorium box office, by phone at 785-532-6428, or online at http://www.k-state.edu/mccain.
* The university's Tap Dance Ensemble will perform at Spooktacular at Manhattan's Sunset Zoo on Saturday, Oct. 20.
* The university's department of physics will partner with the North Central Kansas Astronomical Society for a night of stargazing from 6:30-8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20. The evening will also include a tour of the Beach Museum's "Goodnight Moon" exhibition and a star-based art project. Free hot chocolate is also included.
* The university's Concert Choir, Women's Choirs and Alumni Choir will present a joint concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, in All Faiths Chapel. The choirs are directed by Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu-Oppenheim, both assistant professors of music.
* The university's Collegiate Chorale, Men's Choir and University Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in All Faiths Chapel. The choirs are directed by Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu-Oppenheim, both assistant professors of music.
* The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance will present its annual Opera Workshop at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in All Faiths Chapel. University voice students will presents scenes from classic operas.
* The theater company Actors from the London Stage will bring the Shakespeare comedy "The Merchant of Venice" to Nichols Hall at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 25-27. This is a McCain Performance Series event, with ticket prices ranging from $16-$38 with applicable taxes and fees. * The K-State Singers, directed by Joshua Oppenheim and Julie Yu-Oppenheim, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at McCain Auditorium. A small admission fee will be charged for this event. Tickets can be purchased by calling 785-532-3815.
* The Beach Museum of Art will host its Art Beyond Sight open house from 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. This event is part of national Art Beyond Sight awareness activities.
* Mary Ellen Sutton, professor emeritus of organ, will present a solo recital at 3 p.m Sunday, Oct. 28, in All Faiths Chapel.
* The university's Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble, directed by Steven Maxwell, assistant professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in All Faiths Chapel.
* On Tuesday, Oct. 30, the university Clarinet Choir, under the direction of Tod Kerstetter, professor of music, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. in All Faiths Chapel.
* The university's Big Bands, directed by Wayne Goins, professor of jazz, will perform a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in Forum Hall at the K-State Student Union.
* The annual Halloween Jazz Jam, featuring the university jazz combos, directed by Wayne Goins, professor of jazz, will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, in Union Station at the K-State Student Union.
