You’re standing in the middle of the highway. Nora unfolds a reflective triangle and sets it down. From here, the upside-down SUV can barely be seen.

"Now what?" you ask. The rain is still coming down.

"We wait," Nora says. You and she walk over to the base of a big pine tree. She unfolds a big rain slicker, and you both settle in under it. Some minutes slip by.

"Salmonella," she says. "Bacteria, right? You get it from tainted food."

"Yes," you begin. "The most common type is Salmonella enteritis. That's the kind that gives people food poisoning. You know, you eat bad egg salad, you barf and, um, get diarrhea, all that."

"But that's not what my brother Cam has."
