Audition FAQ
Q: When are music major/minor acceptance auditions?
A: Auditions for acceptance as music major or minor (and potential music scholarships) are held on the KSU campus during the academic year on scheduled dates and at any time of year (by appointment). See scheduled dates and sign up for auditions here. If necessary, schedule an alternative audition date and time directly with Professor Kurt Gartner - kgartner@ksu.edu. Scholarship funds are available through the Music Program as well as University Bands, and this audition is evaluated for scholarships from both sources.
Q: What do I need to play for a major/minor acceptance audition?
A: At a minimum, you must demonstrate proficiency in three of the following six categories:
- snare drum (rudimental or concert)
- keyboard (marimba, vibraphone, etc.)
- timpani
- multi-percussion (concert percussion, electronic percussion etc.)
- hand drums/world percussion
- drum set
It is to your advantage to audition on instruments of more than three categories. You will perform a prepared solo or etude and sight reading on each instrument. (Styles demonstrations are also useful on drum set.)
Q: What do I need to bring to my audition?
A: Plan to bring all sticks, mallets, tuning devices (e.g., tuning fork) that you will need to perform your prepared pieces. At minimum, have one pair each of concert snare drum sticks, timpani mallets, and keyboard percussion (i.e., wrapped or unwrapped) mallets. You may bring instruments of your own, but this is not required.
Q: How long are percussion auditions?
A: Generally, percussion auditions are scheduled for thirty minutes. This allows time for the performance of prepared pieces in three or more categories, sight reading, and interview.
