Organ Audition Requirements

Organ study is available from beginning to advanced levels and is available to music majors or music minors as primary or secondary instrument. Any K-State student may study organ, regardless of their major. It is helpful if students have had previous piano study before they commence organ instruction, but this is not a necessity. Students can pursue a Bachelor of Music or Master of Music degree with organ as their major instrument.

Students who desire to major in music with organ as their primary instrument must play an audition for the keyboard faculty.

Bachelor of Music

Students who wish to pursue the Bachelor of Music degree and study organ as their primary instrument should prepare the following for their audition:

  1. Play 3 contrasting pieces from different stylistic periods (one of which should be an organ work by J. S. Bach); audition repertoire should be no less than 15 minutes long
  2. Bring a list of organ repertoire studied

Bachelor of Arts

Students who wish to pursue the Bachelor of Arts degree and study organ as their primary instrument should prepare the following for their audition:

  1. Play 2 contrasting pieces from different stylistic periods
  2. Bring a list of organ repertoire studied

Master of Music

Students who wish to pursue the Master of Music degree and study organ as their primary instrument should prepare the following for their audition:

  1. Play contrasting pieces from different stylistic periods (one of which should be an organ work by J. S. Bach); audition repertoire should be 30 minutes long
  2. Bring a list of organ repertoire studied

Music Minor

Students who wish to pursue the Music minor and study organ as their primary instrument should prepare the following for their audition:

  1. Play 2 contrasting pieces from different stylistic periods
  2. Bring a list of organ repertoire studied

Pianists who have not previously studied organ but who wish to study organ as their primary instrument may be considered for admission into the organ major by way of a piano audition.
