Director’s Notes

One Dead; One Dying has been a fun, unique and educational journey for each of us; researching radio plays, adapting an original screenplay from a visual to an aural medium, learning about the career paths in voiceover acting, rehearsing remotely, creating in-home studios and recording this piece over a week through Zoom.

Given the impact and ruthlessness, it's amazing that there's so little knowledge of the Young Brothers massacre of 1932. The members of the Young family were known to be small time car thieves and runners before the massacre. Laura Camien developed a great screenplay that allows us a glimpse into the relationships and family of the Youngs of Springfield, Missouri as well as the bonds formed within a smalltown community. By examining these connections, the horrific events become that much more tragic.

Along with the hard work of the cast, this production wouldn't have been possible without the collaboration of writer Laura Camien, sound engineer James Kyle Davis, composer Alex Wakim and stage manager Tyler Parker. A huge thank you to you all and to those listening, we appreciate your joining us on this Kansas Theatre Works adventure.
