Teaching Tech Talk explores Mediasite tools for creating and sharing instructional videos

Faculty and staff looking for a flexible way to create, organize and share instructional videos can take advantage of Mediasite, Kansas State University’s video capture and management platform.

Mediasite allows instructors to record lectures and presentations, capture their computer screens or webcams and upload videos created with other tools. Videos can be securely organized and shared through Canvas or the web, and students can watch them on computers and mobile devices without installing additional plugins.

Mediasite is integrated with Canvas, and instructors can access My Mediasite directly from a course to create or upload video lectures, screencasts, demonstrations and tutorials. Videos can then be published to a designated course or embedded in Canvas content, allowing students to view them without leaving the course.

Mediasite also includes features that can help instructors improve the accessibility and effectiveness of their course videos, including:

• Closed-captioning options
• Searchable video content
• Secure video storage and management
• Individual-student viewing analytics
• Flexible playback tools that allow students to focus on the content most relevant to them

Instructors can use Mediasite to record in Mediasite-equipped classrooms or create recordings from their own computers. The platform can support a range of teaching needs, from recording a full lecture to creating a short tutorial that students can revisit as needed.

Brandon Utech from K-State’s Division of Information Technology will present “Teaching Tech Talk: Mediasite” at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, via Zoom. Utech will introduce the platform and share how Mediasite can support engaging and accessible instructional video. Participants will also have an opportunity to ask questions about using the tool in their courses.

The session is part of the Teaching Tech Talk series, developed to help K-State faculty use available technology tools more effectively in their teaching.
