Wildcats in Recovery seeks Addiction Peer Support Specialists for spring 2027

Wildcats in Recovery offers SMART Recovery meetings facilitated by Kansas State University students who have earned their Addiction Peer Support Specialist credentials. The program is a collaboration between Lafene Counseling and Psychological Services, or CAPS, and K-State’s addiction counseling degree program.

Wildcats in Recovery supports students who are struggling with substance or process addictions, as well as students who have a family member or friend experiencing addiction. During the fall semester, Wildcats in Recovery meets in person at Lafene Health Center from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and virtually from 7-8 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays.

Students interested in serving as an Addiction Peer Support Specialist, or APSS, for the spring semester are invited to apply now. The opportunity provides hands-on experience for students interested in helping others.

Who should apply:

  • Students pursuing a degree in addiction counseling, social work or a similar helping profession.
  • Students with previous personal or professional experience with individuals or families affected by addiction or other mental health concerns.
  • Students who identify as a person in recovery.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Applicants must be majoring in addiction counseling, social work or a similar undergraduate or graduate degree program that emphasizes helping professions, case management or counseling techniques.
  • Applicants must be enrolled in spring 2027 and currently enrolled in or have successfully completed one of the following courses: ADC 395, ADC 561/SOCWK 561, ADC 570/SOCWK 570, ADC 661/SOCWK 661 or ADC 670/SOCWK 670.
  • Students must be invited by the addiction counseling program coordinator to enroll in the APSS independent study course. Students selected to serve as an APSS may earn 3 or 6 credit hours by enrolling in the independent study course to fulfill the volunteer role.
