What is the Watershed Game?

The Watershed Game is an active, hands-on simulation that helps participants understand the relationships between land use, water quality, flood resilience, and their community. Working in teams, participants apply tools (practices, plans, and policies) to decrease water pollution and increase flood resilience while balancing financial resources.

The Watershed Game for Local Leaders is designed for use with groups of up to 25 players composed of elected and appointed officials, members of watershed organizations, association members, and other community leaders and group members. The game simulates hands-on decision making, helps facilitate discussions on sensitive and complex issues in a non-threatening manner, and gives participants an opportunity to view issues from new perspectives.

Additionally, attendees will be eligible to earn five Continuing Education hours (also known as Professional Development hours). Please note that continuing education requirements vary by state and profession. It is the responsibility of participants to verify with their licensing or accrediting body whether these hours will be accepted. Kansas State University, the provider of these Continuing Education hours, is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Participants will leave prepared and confident to facilitate and use the Watershed Game with classrooms and youth groups.
Participants will increase their knowledge and understanding of core water literacy concepts; impacts of land use decisions on local, regional, and national water resources; and approaches to reducing or preventing impacts from non-point source pollution.
Participants will increase their skills at developing and communicating learning objectives and using the Watershed Game to teach to those objectives.
