Nominate a Distinguished Lecturer

Nominees must be highly accomplished, engaging speakers of broad appeal.

• Distinguished Lecturers typically will have achieved special recognition and prominence within their field.
• We encourage nominations from any area of research, scholarship and creative activity.
• Preference will be given to nominees who appeal to a wide audience, including those beyond the Distinguished Lecturer's dsciplinary field.

Regular Track Nominations

1. The UDP president forms the year's President's Distinguished Lecturers Committee, or PDLC, by the September meeting.
   1. The committee consists of five members with disciplinary breadth, including one chair, one ex-chair, and two previous years' committee members.
2. By October 1, the Chair of the PDLC asks the President's Office to distribute the short form for nomination to the university community.
3. November 1 will be the deadline for nominations for lecturers speaking in the subsequent academic year.
4. The PDLC then classifies nominees as acceptable or unacceptable lecturers.
   1. It ranks acceptable lecturers and works with their nominators to add needed information to the application form, including proposed budget (travel, accommodations, honorarium, related costs, etc.).
   2. The committee evaluates budgets and prepares the information, as the President's Office will fund up to two lectures per year, one scheduled in the fall semester and one in the spring semester.
5. By December 1, the PDLC forwards its selections to the UDP president, who sends it to the Office of the President for confirmation.
6. The Chair of the PDLC informs unsuccessful nominators if their nominees were not funded.

Special Track Nominations

Special Track nominations are intended for extraordinarily strong speakers who come up outside of the Regular Track timeline and process. This request can be made any time of year:

1. The nomination comes into the PDLC through the UDP president or President's Office.
2. The PDLC classifies the candidate as acceptable or unacceptable. If acceptable, the PDLC indicates their degree of support.
   1. The committee provides comments on budget and within one week, the PDLC forwards its recommendation to the President's Office.
3. The President's Office then contacts the nominator and PDLC with the decision.
