Abstract
Learning reaches new heights when students are engaged within the context of a community. Examples will be provided where remote-keypad technology and small group discussions help transform a large introductory science course into a vibrant, interactive learning environment. In a separate course, science students are going out into the local community to collect and analyze soil, dust, and water samples from homes where children have become lead poisoned. Students are discovering how their laboratory skills can be used to help create a healthier home environment for disadvantaged youth.
