Characteristic Wastes
Ignitability (D001) (40 CFR 261.21)
A waste that meets any of the following criteria:
- A liquid that has a flash point of less than 140o F.
- A solid, under standard temperature and pressure, that can cause fire through friction, absorption of moisture, or spontaneous chemical changes and when ignited burns vigorously and persistently that it creates a hazard.
- An ignitable/flammable compressed gas.
- An oxidizer.
Corrosivity (D002) (40 CFR 261.22)
A waste that meets any of the following criteria:
- An aqueous solution that has a pH of 2 or less or 12.5 or more.
- A liquid that corrodes steel at a rate of 6.35 mm or more per year.
Reactivity (D003) (40 CFR 261.23)
A solid waste that meets any of the following criteria:
- Normally unstable and readily undergoes violent change without detonating.
- Reacts violently with water.
- Forms potentially explosive mixtures with water.
- Generates toxic gases when mixed with water.
- Contains cyanide or sulfide that generates a toxic gas when exposed to pH conditions between 2 and 12.5.
- Explosive.
