Salina Campus Hazardous Waste Generator Status and Management Requirements

Kansas State University Salina Campus is classified as a Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG)

To be classified as a CESQG, the campus must meet the following criteria:

  • Generate less than 25 kilograms (55 pounds) of hazardous waste in a single calendar month.
  • Generate and accumulate less than 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) in a single calendar month of acutely hazardous waste (P-list) or 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of any residue or contaminated soil, waste, or other debris resulting from the cleanup of a spill, into or on any land or water, of any acute hazardous wastes listed in 40 CFR 261.31 (F list) or 261.33(e) (P-list) .

General Requirements

  • Make a hazardous waste determination for each hazardous waste stream generated. Use the Hazardous Waste Determination Form(.pdf) on the EHS website.
    • If analytical testing is needed contact EHS.
    • Use one Hazardous Waste Determination Form per waste stream, not one form for each chemical in the waste stream.
  • Track monthly waste generation amounts to ensure campus is below 25 kilograms (55 pounds) of waste generated per month. Use the Laboratory/Shop Monthly Hazardous Waste Generation Log(.xls) at each location where hazardous waste is generated. Do NOT add wastes generated in the previous month to the current month on the log.

One person must collect the monthly logs and combine that information into the Campus Monthly Hazardous Waste Generation Log(.xls). Calculate the monthly total for the campus and ensure adherence to the following statements:

  • Never generate more than 25 kilograms (55 pounds) of hazardous waste in a single calendar month.
  • Never generate or accumulate 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) or more of acutely hazardous waste onsite. If that amount is exceeded the campus will be subject to Large Quantity Generator (LQG) standards.
  • Never store more than 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds) of hazardous waste on-site. If that amount is exceeded the campus will be subject to LQG standards.
  • Do not add wastes generated in the previous month to the current month on the log.
  • Contact EHS immediately if any of the totals are exceeded.

Container Management Requirements

  • Conduct monthly inspections of hazardous waste storage areas. Use the Hazardous Waste Monthly Inspection Form(.doc) .
  • The inspections should be documented in a log and should include:
    • the date
    • time of the inspection
    • name of the inspector
    • notation of the observations made
    • date and nature of any repairs or other remedial actions.
  • Each container must be in good condition.
  • Clearly label or mark each container with the words “Hazardous Waste”.
  • Clearly mark the Start Date on the label and ensure that the date is visible for inspection on each container. The Start Date is the day waste is first put into the container.
  • Clearly mark the Full Date on the label and ensure that the date is visible for inspection on each container. The Full Date is the day the waste is full or is no longer being used.
  • Each container must be compatible with its contents.
  • Each container must be kept closed except when adding or removing waste.
  • Hazardous wastes must not be stored near other hazardous wastes or materials with which they are incompatible.

Training Requirements

  • Hazardous Waste Training - annually, provided by EHS in person or on line.
  • Department of Transportation Training required every 3 years for personnel signing Hazardous Waste Manifests. Call EHS to make arrangements.

Record Keeping Requirements

Maintain completed Logs and Forms for a minimum of 5 years:

  1. Hazardous Waste Determination Form
  2. Laboratory/Shop Monthly Hazardous Waste Generation Log
  3. Campus Monthly Hazardous Waste Generation Log
  4. Hazardous Waste Monthly Inspection Form
  5. Records of waste taken to the Saline County HHW facility
  6. Hazardous Waste Manifests
  7. DOT training records
  8. Hazardous waste training records

Hazardous Waste Disposal

  • Currently the Salina campus is allowed to take small amounts of hazardous waste to the Saline Count Household Hazardous Waste Facility, located at

315 E. Elm St.

  • Parts washer solvents are shipped out through a hazardous waste management company. Personnel signing the manifest for these shipments must have DOT training.
  • If a laboratory cleanout is needed or waste is not accepted at the Saline Co. HHW facility, notify the Manhattan campus Environmental Health and Safety office. EHS will make arrangements with a hazardous waste contractor to pick up the waste.
