AMETH 160: Introduction to American Ethnic Studies (pdf)

This course prepares students to function productively in our multicultural society and provides a deep understanding of America's race relations and how race and ethnic understandings have been shaped across history. We explore Native American, African American, Mexican/Latina/o American, Asian American and white American historical dynamics. We offer you the opportunity to participate in some of the most difficult yet rewarding conversations in today's America.

AMETH 351: African American Perspectives: Black Women's Health and Joy (pdf)

What's missing from the public health narrative regarding health disparities that disproportionately impact Black women? The wholeness of Black women's stories! In this class, students will hear real-world stories from Black women living with joy while living with hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Each story will be enhanced with scholarly and popular sources. Join Dr. Omni as she helps the next generation of scholars transform the defiict narrative!

AMETH 353: Latinx Popular Music (pdf)

From Selena to Shakira and Reggaetón to Residente, this course will explore the artists and genres of the 1990's Latin Boom to Super Bowl LIV's Latinx Extravaganza featuring J. Lo, Shakira, Bad Bunny, and J. Balvin. We will also do a section on Lin-Manuel Miranda and his Disney/Rap/Musical music. So if you love cumbia rhythms; listen to hip-hop, rap, and reggaetón; and want to explore social justice in Latinx music, enroll in this 2nd 8-week online course.

GWSS 105: Intro to Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies (pdf)

GWSS 105 is an interdisciplinary analysis of personal experiences and social and political institutions as they shape and are shaped by the intersections of gender, race, class, sex, sexuality, ethnicity, nation, citizenship, and ability on local, national, and global levels. Topics include the roles of biology and social construction in shaping gender and sexuality; sources of structural inequalities; and feminist, queer, trans, anti-racist, and anti-colonial activisms.

GWSS 380: Global Struggles for Feminist, Queer, and Trans Justice (pdf)

Ever wonder how something as far away as the Russian invasion of Ukraine could impact Native people's fight againt sexual and gender violence here in Kansas? This class will explore the complex connections between seemingly unconnected justice struggles women and queer folks are engaged in around the world. Our goal is to learn from and be accountable to the transational feminist and queer resistance movements we will study.

STRAN 550: Practicing Social Justice (pdf)

What can we learn from social justice organizers in MHK and throughout the state and region? What wisdom, hard truths, and lessons learned do they have to share about how to create lasting change in our communities? This class is an applied and immersive experience where students will get to know and work closely with different local social justice organizations & nonprofits each week.
