American ethnic studies minor

Employers in all fields seek individuals who communicate productively in a multicultural society. Minoring in American ethnic studies will give you an an understanding of diversity, race relations and critical thinking which makes you stand out to employers looking for that well-rounded student.

Minors will explore fascinating social interactions between Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican/Latina/o Americans, Asian Americans and White Americans. You will gain and use tools to understand the dynamics of contemporary America’s multiple cultures. Minors are taught to think critically about the multifaceted realities and identities of America’s diverse ethnicities; promotes social justice ideals and practices of inclusivity; fosters community-based engaged research and praxis responsive to the needs and realities of underserved constituencies; and foregrounds the needs, concerns, and knowledge of historically underrepresented peoples of color in Kansas.

Students can earn a minor in American ethnic studies (AMETH), with 15 credit hours, including following courses:

  • AMETH 160: Introduction to American ethnic studies (3 credit hours)
  • Choose one 3-credit hour course from the following:
    • AMETH 351: African American perspectives (3 credit hours)
    • AMETH 352: American Indian perspectives (3 credit hours)
    • AMETH 353: Latina/o perspectives (3 credit hours)
    • AMETH 354: Asian American perspectives (3 credit hours)
  • Three additional AMETH courses (9 credit hours, total)
