A letter from VP Cindy Bontrager: President's Cabinet approves revised weapons policy
Dear faculty, staff and students,
Interim president Gen. Richard Myers and the President's Cabinet approved the revised weapons draft policy on Oct. 4. The Kansas Board of Regents Governance Committee reviewed the revised weapons policies for K-State, Emporia State University and Fort Hays State University on Oct. 19. The Governance Committee will review the remaining university policies for the University of Kansas, Pittsburg State University and Wichita State University during the Governance Committee meeting on Nov. 16. The Governance Committee will not take action until after it has reviewed the policies for all six universities. We expect to receive further direction from the board regarding its process for approving the weapons policy following the Governance Committee's November meeting.
We appreciate the thoughtful comments and recommendations submitted by the campus community through the vice president for administration and finance website, public forums and as committee subgroup and working group members. Your comments and insights proved valuable as the working group considered revisions to the policy before submitting it to the Governance Committee. Overall, there weren't substantial changes made to the draft weapons policy, though many of the comments have helped identify topics for training and educational materials.
The university is committed to providing a safe environment for our students, faculty, staff and visitors. Moving forward, the work group will continue to coordinate with the campus community to develop guidelines, procedures, training and educational materials. Thank you for your cooperation and input as we continue to prepare the university for the concealed carry implementation on July 1, 2017.
Thanks for your support,
Cindy Bontrager
Vice President for Administration and Finance
