Funding Education Abroad Week

Submitted by Sara E Boro

Education Abroad and the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships will host Funding Education Abroad Week from Sept. 4-10. The week will consist of a series of events to promote funding opportunities available to students who are interested in participating in education abroad programs. The week includes two Education Abroad scholarship workshops, two Gilman Scholarship workshops and a panel discussion comprised of Gilman Scholarship recipients.

The Education Abroad scholarship workshops are open to all students. During these workshops, Education Abroad and the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships will discuss different scholarships available through the Office of International Programs, various departments at K-State, national and international. They also will share tips on how to make your scholarship application competitive.

The Gilman Workshop and Webinar are open to Pell Grant-eligible students. During these workshops, students will learn more about the Gilman scholarship and how to get started on their application. The Gilman Scholarship Program is an undergraduate grant program for U.S. citizens of limited financial means to enable them to study abroad. The program provides awards of up to $5,000 for undergraduate students at two- and four-year institutions who are receiving a Pell Grant to study or intern abroad.

During the panel discussion, Off the Beaten Path, K-State students and Gilman Scholars will share their international experiences in non-traditional locations. Thomas Meek, junior in personal financial planning, will share his experience studying Spanish in Costa Rica. Crystal Miller, graduate student in family science community service, will share her experience studying social justice in India. Finally, Cheyanne Helms, senior in anthropology, will share her experience serving in the Dominican Republic with International Services Teams through the School of Leadership Studies.
