Kansas Board of Regents February meeting agenda items
Dear K-State community,
The Kansas Board of Regents will meet Feb. 20-21 at the Curtis State Office Building in Topeka. The board will consider the following agenda items during the meeting.
The Regents will approve requests to issue certificates of approval with new degree-granting authority to California Coast University and The Los Angeles Film School. Private and out-of-state postsecondary educational institutions are required to obtain certificates of approval from the Kansas Board of Regents to lawfully operate in Kansas.
The Regents will adopt an updated resolution to name newly appointed Regents Mark Hutton and Allen Schmidt, Provost and Executive Vice President Charles Taber, and Board President and CEO Blake Flanders to the University Security Executive Committee. In support of the university's pursuit of the Biosecurity Research Institute project, the board first adopted a resolution of this nature at its March 2009 meeting, accompanied by a requirement for annual feedback from the Security Executive Committee regarding its activities.
Kansas State University requests approval to offer a Bachelor of Science in hospitality management in the Kansas City metro area. The program has been offered via distance learning with a small face-to-face component, but market research indicated an increasing demand for more of the program to be offered in a face-to-face format. Board policy requires off-campus face-to-face academic courses and programs offered outside of a university's service area in the Kansas City metropolitan area to be approved by the Regents. Under the new program format, 42 hours of the 60-hour program will be offered face-to-face at K-State Olathe.
The Regents will act on K-State's request to name the mechanical and nuclear engineering department after an individual. President Richard Myers will announce the name at the meeting.
The Regents will receive two annual facilities-related reports. The inventory of physical facilities and space utilization report includes building information related to area and replacement costs, age, room usage and utilization of classrooms and laboratories. The state university deferred and annual maintenance report provides an overview of the maintenance needs based on audits performed on all buildings and infrastructure at each state educational institution. Both reports will be submitted to Gov. Kelly, Joint Committee on State Building Construction, the Senate Committee on Ways and Means and the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriations.
The Regents will act on K-State's request to award an honorary doctorate during the May 2019 Graduate School commencement ceremony. The individual will be announced at the meeting.
The Council of Presidents and the Fiscal Affairs and Audit Committee will receive a draft parental leave policy and information from the Council of Business Officers on the cost estimate to provide parental leave to state university employees. This follows Executive Order No. 18-19 issued by former Gov. Jeff Colyer to provide a new parental leave benefit to certain executive branch employees.
On Thursday, Feb. 20, Blake Flanders, president and CEO, will present the annual Foresight 2020 report.
