"Unintended Consequences" is a work for 16 dancers inspired by "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks," the K-State Book Network selection for 2012. The dance functions on two levels. It is a dynamic, energy filled dance and for audience members who have read the book, the dance evokes the complicated, intertwined and surprising unintended consequences that came from the initial act of collecting Henrietta Lack's cells. The movement is abstract rather than literal. Ideas explored include cell mitosis and fusion, DNA imagery, morphing, transformation and various emotional states experienced when facing the unknown.
Members of the Flute Ensemble will perform as part of the ballet piece, "Maroon Jasmine." The concert also includes a modern work by David Ollington set to the music of Craig Weston. A vibrant jazz number for 12 dancers choreographed by Julie L. Pentz, along with some solos, duets and small ensembles, create a varied program sure to please. The concert closes with a performance by the K-State Tap Ensemble.
