Chemical engineering senior wins national student design competition
Andrew Woolley, senior in chemical engineering, is the recipient of the A. McLaren White Award for his first-place-winning entry in the American Institute for Chemical Engineers national student design competition. He will present his design at the institute's student conference on Nov. 17 in Atlanta, Georgia, and will receive $500 with the award.
Woolley's process was selected as the top design responding to the contest problem to manufacture the next generation of vaccines using a non-egg-based platform for producing the influenza vaccine, a challenge designed by a designated company to typify a real, working chemical engineering design situation. He completed this project as a part of a senior-level design class taught by John Schlup, chemical engineering professor.
Jennifer Anthony, chemical engineering associate professor and American Institute for Chemical Engineers student chapter faculty adviser, nominated Woolley for the award. Projects entered in the competition must be completed by the student with no input from faculty or peers.
