Ahern named Steel Ring Advisor of the Year

Submitted by Mary Rankin

Christopher Ahern, assistant professor in the department of architectural engineering and construction science, has been named 2014-2015 recipient of the Clair Mauch Steel Ring Advisor of the Year Award.

The annual award, presented by the College of Engineering senior leadership organization, Steel Ring, recognizes individual achievement in advising by a full-time faculty member. Selection criteria include demonstrated concern for students' academic progress; familiarity with administrative, university and departmental advising policies; and availability to students with recognized ability to positively influence their education.

Ahern received bachelor's and master's degrees in architectural engineering from Kansas State University. After graduating, he joined PKMR Engineers, Overland Park, working on a variety of project types as a consulting engineer including mechanical, electrical and plumbing design, as well as construction management and commissioning. He was a principal at the firm before returning to K-State to teach in 2013.

"We are very proud to have this year's Advisor of the Year awardee from our department," said Ray Yunk, professor and department head of architectural engineering and construction science. "Chris is a top-notch adviser who enjoys interacting with students — helping them to become successful graduates of our architectural engineering and construction science programs."

Ahern will be recognized with a certificate and cash award at the College of Engineering and Open House Awards Banquet April 16 in the K-State Student Union's Grand Ballroom.
