Wood featured as vocalist with Heartland Baroque in North Carolina concerts
Submitted by School of Music, Theatre, and Dance
David Simmons Wood, advanced instructor of music and director of K-State's early-music ensembles, was the featured vocalist for a new concert program by North Carolina-based ensemble Heartland Baroque. The "Turlough O'Carolan: Bard of the Emerald Isle" concerts were held Jan. 12 and 15 in Pittsboro and Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
This newly conceived concert program celebrates the life and timeless music of Turlough O'Carolan, 1670-1738, one of Ireland's most beloved and renowned composers. Honored in Dublin's St. Patrick's Cathedral as "The last of the Irish bards," O'Carolan was a musician who epitomized a centuries-old Gaelic tradition of the traveling poet troubadour. His enchanting melodies have endured for centuries, weaving together traditional Irish sounds with the elegance of Italian baroque composition at the turn of the 18th century.
Wood is the director of the Collegium Musicum, Madrigal and Motet Ensemble, and the Recorder Consort. Wood's performing career has included appearances with Dallas Bach Society, The Orchestra of New Spain (Dallas), The New York Baroque Dance Company, The New York State Baroque, Texas Choral Artists, and Fenix de los Ingenios, and others, as well as performances at the Boston, Indianapolis and Bloomington Early Music Festivals.
