Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service 2014

Submitted by Ross Allen

Attention K-State Students, Faculty and Staff:

Need volunteer or community service hours? Want to make a difference in the Manhattan community? Then we would like to extend a special invitation for you to take part in Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on Jan. 20 — the day before spring semester classes start.

This year, our goal is to mobilize more than 300 volunteers to participate in direct service to the Manhattan community with more than 22 partner organizations. Volunteers will be involved with projects centered around youth education, the arts, environment, disaster response, hunger and homelessness. Teams will be involved with a variety of projects, from cleaning parks and roadsides to working with kids.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is a national day of service designated by Congress and led by the Corporation for National and Community Service. Taking place each year, this day of service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service — a "day on, not a day off." The day of service is a part of United We Serve," the president's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

The Martin Luther King Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems and moves us closer to King's vision of a beloved community. Locally, the Martin Luther King Day of Service is observed in conjunction with the community-based Martin Luther King Memorial Committee where K-State students, faculty and staff join members of the community in serving at local nonprofits and on special projects around Manhattan.

Volunteers will meet at Manhattan Town Center Mall for registration, no later than 15 minutes prior to their shift, which will begin at either 9 a.m. or noon, as selected during online signup.

Thank you so much for your continued support of HandsOn Kansas State and the Manhattan community. With your help, this will be the most engaged, impactful Martin Luther King Day yet,

3Cheers4Volunteers!
