According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 76 million Americans are affected by food poisoning or other food borne illnesses every year. Of that number, more than 300,000 end up hospitalized and around 5,000 die as a result of their exposure.
While anyone can get food poisoning, pregnant women, the very young and the elderly are most likely to suffer the most serious consequences. Read more about types and symptoms of food poisoning.
