Princeton professor to present tonight on U.S. foreign policy, democratization in the Middle East

Submitted by Krista Bohnenblust

The department of political science hosts Amaney Jamal tonight, Feb. 27, in a lecture series in honor of the Michael W. Suleiman chair in Arab-American studies. Jamal will present "Of Empires and Citizens: Pro-American Democracy or No Democracy at All?" at 7 p.m. in the Hemisphere Room of Hale Library.

Jamal is an associate professor of political science and the director of the Workshop on Arab Political Development at Princeton University. Named a Carnegie Scholar in 2005, Jamal has written four books. The first, "Barriers to Democracy," which won the best book award in comparative democratization at the American Political Science Association in 2008, explores the role of civic associations in promoting democratic effects in the Arab world. Her second and third books, "Citizenship and Crisis" and "Race and Arab Americans After 9-11," explore Arab-Americans in the U.S. Her most recent book, "Of Empires and Citizens," is forthcoming this summer. She has published in a number of leading journals and is co-principal investigator of two award-winning data sets, the Arab barometer project and the Detroit Arab-American study.
