Nancy Muturi, associate professor of journalism and mass communications, has published two articles based on her research on alcoholism in Kenya.
The first article, "Engaging Communities in Understanding Chronic Alcoholism in Rural Central," has been published in the Journal of International Communication by Taylor & Francis. This article applies the participatory approach to identify the social, cultural, economic and environmental factors that lead to excessive consumption of unrecorded alcohol, also referred to as the second-generation alcohol. The over consumption of this type of alcohol has reached epidemic levels in spite of numerous interventions to prevent it.
The second article, "Alcohol consumption and reproductive health risks in rural Central Kenya," has been published in the Sexual and Reproductive Health journal by Elsevier. This publication focuses on reproductive health risks associated with alcoholism. In communities that are impacted by HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, she wanted to find out participants’ perceptions about how it affected their sexual and reproductive health of both alcohol consumers and nonconsumers.
