The Association for Continuing Higher Education has selected Kansas State University's Global Campus academic advising programs for the 2014 Distinguished Program Award in the credit program category.
The award will be presented at the association's annual conference Oct. 28 in Las Vegas. The award is presented to outstanding colleagues and programs in the field of continuing education.
"We sincerely appreciate the award from the Association for Continuing Higher Education," said Ken Hughey, academic advising programs coordinator, chair and professor of special education and counseling and student affairs. "The award is a credit to the faculty and staff of the special education, counseling and student affairs department and the K-State Global Campus. In addition, the support and involvement of Dean Debbie Mercer, former Dean Mike Holen and National Academic Advising Association have been important to the programs' success."
To be selected for an award, a program should be original, innovative and successful. The program must meet established goals and objectives; receive positive responses from the target group as demonstrated in evaluations with measurable outcomes; and meet budget requirements defined for its goals and objectives.
The academic advising programs are offered through K-State's Global Campus. The graduate certificate in academic advising began in 2003 and the master's degree in academic advising was initiated in 2008. Their development involved special education, counseling and student affairs; the College of Education; K-State Global Campus; and the National Academic Advising Association. More than 400 students have completed the graduate certificate and nearly 330 students have graduated with an master's degree in academic advising since 2003.
