Celebrate International Education Week Nov. 16-21
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education. It is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.
"We are excited to celebrate International Education Week," said Marcelo Sabates, associate provost of the office of international programs. "With 2,247 international students on campus this fall — our largest international enrollment ever — there will be many opportunities to engage in global activities. We encourage our students, faculty and staff to participate and recognize this important week of cultural diversity."
The International Education Week committee with representatives from through the university has been busy planning events and activities including:
• Sunday, Nov. 16: 5:30 p.m., International Food Festival featuring global cuisine at Jardine Apartments Frith Community Center, presented by the International Coordinating Council. For ticket information email nurlmardiyati@k-state.edu.
• Tuesday, Nov. 18: 5-6:30 p.m., K-State International Awards Reception in the Tadtman Boardroom Alumni Center. Provost April Mason will make remarks and recognize each winner. Awards to presented include: International Educator of the Year Award, to a K-State individual who has made significant contributions to advancing international education at the university; Innovative Educator of the Year Award, to an organization that has partnered with our university and elevated international awareness; Outstanding Service to the Office of International Programs Award, given by the Office of International Programs leadership team to the K-State department or college that has gone above and beyond in providing service to our international students and supporting K-State international initiatives.
• Wednesday, Nov. 19: 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Office of International Programs International Education Week Fair is in the K-State Student Union on the first floor by the food court. K-State departments and organizations will sponsor tables featuring activities that promote and celebrate international awareness and include: Office of International Programs, English Language Program, Alumni Association, Athletics, A.Q. Miller School of Journalism and Mass Communications and Take Flight PR Agency, Graduate School, International Buddies, International Coordinating Council, International Student and Scholar Services, Union Program Council, African Ensemble from the dance program, Study Abroad Office, International Service Teams Leadership Studies and Centro Studi Citta di Orvieto, Italy; 5 p.m., Meet K-State international athletes in the K-State Student Union's Room 227. The athletes will share their food culture and experience from their countries as well as their impressions at K-State.
Thursday, Nov. 20: 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., K-State's John Leslie, Marcelo Sabates and Lynn Ewanow will present "How International is Kansas State?" as part of the Vernon Larson Lecture series in Hale Library's Hemisphere Room; 6:30 p.m., Exploring Cultural Differences Through Drama workshop will be in the International Student Center. Everyone experiences culture shock when moving to a new place. But how do you move forward through the shock to a deeper understanding? This workshop will provide an enjoyable way to learn more about adjusting to U.S. culture. Come prepared to share your stories and have fun problem-solving through role play, drama games and discussion. Facilitated by Jessica Munoz, master's degree student in drama therapy.
