Submitted by Shandell Gallardo
K-State's Staley School of Leadership Studies and the Manhattan community will come together Jan. 17-19 for the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration and Day of Service.
Millions of Americans will gather on Monday, Jan. 19, for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, a day of national service and dialogue to honor his memory. This day of service is being led by the world's leading organization for volunteer work, Points of Light and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
King called for social justice and opportunity, he asked that we bridge differences and come together in unity to do our best and to lend a helping hand to our neighbors. To lend a hand to the Manhattan community, HandsOn Kansas State has several events and conversations planned to celebrate King.
Saturday, Jan. 17: Community Celebration and Candlelight Vigil will be from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Flint Hills Christian School auditorium.
Sunday, Jan. 18: In collaboration with the Konza United Way, Sunday Supper: A Community Conversation, will be from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Manhattan Christian Fellowship Church.
Monday, Jan. 19: A Prayer Breakfast will be at 8 a.m. at the Four Points by Sheridan. The Manhattan Town Center Mall will host the rest of the day's activities, which include volunteering around the Manhattan community. Individuals and groups are encouraged to meet at the mall for registration no later than 8:30 a.m., where they will be assigned a service site. Volunteers will serve at these sites from 9 a.m. to noon. Service sites for the Day of Service include Stoneybrook Assisted Living, Ogden Friendship House of Hope, Manhattan Public Library, Manhattan Arts Center, Manhattan Emergency Shelter, Salvation Army and Stoneybrook Retirement Community. Any additional Manhattan nonprofit organizations are invited to participate in partnership with HandsOn Kansas State.
The MLK Jr. Mall Celebration will celebrate the vision, leadership and service of King through entertainment from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. A film screening and discussion of "Community Cinema: A Path Appears" will take place from 4-6 p.m.
