Fiction writer Justin Torres to read from his work on Friday

On Friday, March 27, fiction writer Justin Torres will read from his work at 3:30 p.m. in K-State Student Union's Little Theatre.

Torres is the author of "We the Animals," a New York Times best-seller. He has published short fiction in The New Yorker, Harper's, Granta, Tin House, Washington Post, Glimmer Train, Flaunt and other publications. A graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop, he was a Wallace Stegner fellow at Stanford University, and most recently a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard.

Torres currently teaches at Columbia University, in Lesley University's Low Residency MFA Program, and at The Writers' Foundry MFA Program at St. Joseph's College.

"Justin Torres's 'We the Animals' describes the joy and hardships of a working-class family in prose that is as sharp, lyrical, and economical as poetry" said Katy Karlin, associate professor of English. "Each vignette builds on the one before it and amounts to something moving and memorable."

Dan Hoyt, director of the Creative Writing Program and associate professor in English, agrees.

"'We the Animals' is a fractured coming-of-age novel that explores issues of sexual and ethnic identity. Torres's work is vivid, often beautiful, and striking in all kinds of ways," Hoyt said.

Torres's reading is sponsored by the English department and the Creative Writing Enthusiasts. The event is free and open to the public. A book-signing will follow the reading.
