Mathematics Colloquium Lecture April 14

Submitted by Reta McDermott

Jeremy Tyson, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign will present "An Invitation to Analysis in Metric Measure Spaces via Rademacher's Differentiation Theorem" as part of the Mathematics Department Colloquium Lecture series at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in 102 Cardwell Hall.

The abstract for the lecture: Rademacher's differentiation theorem for Lipschitz functions in Euclidean space has been a cornerstone of twentieth century analysis. The past twenty years have witnessed the development of a new field of abstract analysis on metric measure spaces lacking any underlying Riemannian structure. I will give a broad introduction to this subject, structured around the history of nonsmooth extensions of Rademacher's differentiation theorem. Various examples of non-Riemannian metric measure spaces supporting a robust first-order theory of analysis and geometry will be described.
